WHERE
TO STAY IN BRITAIN?
If you have a lot of
money, you will probably go to a hotel. If you have friend
there, you may be invited to stay with them. But of course it is possible to travel to
Britain without having a lot of money or British friends there.
If you take a part in a language course, you will probably live with a host family. A host family is a very carefully chosen family that
is paid for providing accommodation and food for you. These families are usually very nice
and there you can feel very much like a family member.
If you are a tourist, you can stay in a Bed and
Breakfast - simply called a "B and B" - which is much cheaper than a
hotel. You can find "B and Bs" in private houses, in cities and villages all
over the country. They offer a bed for the night and breakfast in the morning.
If you are a young tourist, become a member of the Youth Hostels
Association (YHA) and then you can find accommodation in Youth
Hostels. These are places where you have to share a room (usually with bunk-beds)
and facilities with other young people. You can buy breakfast and sometimes an evening
meal there, or cook for yourself in a self-catering kitchen. The YHA was founded in 1930
to provide young people, who didn't have much money and wanted to explore the country,
with inexpensive accommodation. Youth Hostels are usually closed during the day (from 10
a.m. to 5 p.m.). You can obtain more information from YHA National Services, Trevelyan
House, 8 St. Stephen's Hill, St. Albans, Herts AL1 2DY, Great Britain.
