IDAHO
People have referred to Idaho as God's country because of its huge mountains and
vast forests. The landscape is unequalled in its rugged beauty. If a person were
simply to start walking from a road in the middle of central Idaho and trekked
for an hour, there is a good chance that they would be looking at places never
seen before by another human being. It is like the rest of the world doesn't
exist.
Like many other western states, Idaho was basically untouched
by Europeans until the early nineteenth century. The famous explorers Meriwether
Lewis and William Clark faced some of their most difficult challenges in
north-central Idaho, which is the home of Hell's Canyon and the Nez Perce
Indians. In 1805, Lewis and Clark realized in Idaho that no direct northwest
passage to the Pacific Ocean existed, which was what Thomas Jefferson (the US's
third president) had hoped. But they did find something else: an endless
frontier of natural beauty that had sustained several Native American tribes for
generations.
The plentiful nature still remains unspoiled and spectacular
today. Part mountains, part forest, and part desert, Idaho is a perfect place
for hiking, camping, skiing, fishing, or whatever else you'd like to do
outdoors.
Coeur d'Alene is one of the most beautiful cities in the
state. It is surrounded by lakes for swimming and mountains for skiing. This
town is a part of the panhandle (pruh většího
území) region of Idaho, famous for its lush (bujný)
pine forests and large lakes. Or travel on to central Idaho, which boasts huge
mountain ranges and over 300 alpine lakes (vysokohorská
jezera). For those of you with a spirit for
adventure, the Middle Fork of the Salmon River is a perfect place for
river-rafting. Idaho offers more stretches of white water than any other state
in the lower 48 U.S. states.
Some envision Idaho as being too sparse to offer any
interesting city life. Many people think Idaho is a total farming community
without culture. There are four wineries in Idaho. There are also art galleries,
museums, theaters, and social gatherings.
Boise is a capital and a beautiful town. It is a large city
with many cultural and recreational activities.
On the negative side, sometimes the residents of Idaho can
have clashing opinions. Other states often hear about incidents involving white
supremacist (rasisté) groups who have their headquarters in southern Idaho.
The people in the northern regions of Idaho and the people of
the southern regions do not relate at all. The north is more liberal, the south
is conservative and has a high Mormon population.
Idaho is mostly known for its high mountains, winding rivers,
and deep blue lakes. It is a state untroubled by the big-city hassles of heavy
traffic and pollution, a place where people can enjoy nature the way it has been
forever. The state offers incredible outdoor experience and is a wonderful place
to grow up.
